In an interview with Fox News, actor
and political commentator Ben Stein said that Obama is “the most racist
president” America’s ever had. He claimed Obama was “purposely using race to
divide Americans,” specifically stating that claims made by Democrats that
Republicans don’t care about blacks because of cuts made to welfare programs
that would have helped them are just ridiculous because the cuts made were very
miniscule and didn’t seem to be affecting people that much, seeing as more
people than ever are on food stamps, getting welfare, and getting government
subsidized healthcare. He also pointed out that the Republicans approved
policies stopping the economic crash of 2008-2009 from escalating into another
Great Depression. Furthermore, he talked about how whenever black people are
targeted, it always seems to be pinned on Republicans because Democrats claim
that they have policies against black people in the economy, when in fact no
such policies exist. Stein also said he’s seen Democrats send out pamphlets
claiming that Republicans are “targeting Obama because he’s black,” so black
people should go out and support him, and black people ultimately decide to go
with Obama because he’s their race. He argued that because Republicans passed
all the Civil Rights laws, they’re as pro-black as you can get. During the
interview, a poll by Fox was shown saying that 31% of voters said they’re worse
off than they were in 2008, 47% think the GOP would do more to improve the
economy, and 43% say the economy is the most important issue right now. Stein claimed that those statistics were given
by Democrats as a way to racialize voters in the US. Although he might have gone
too far in calling Obama “racist,” all of what he said really makes you wonder
how race affects politics. Who is really
to blame for how a certain race will vote? Will certain people really only vote
for someone because the person is their race? Who is leading them to believe
accusations of laws treating their race unfairly, and why are they so quick to
believe them without finding out for themselves? We heard one side of the story about what the
Democrats do to persuade people to vote for them, but we didn’t hear anything
about the lengths Republicans will go to. Are they more or less fair to certain
races? What policies do they have set up? Hearing only one side of an argument
doesn’t paint a complete picture, so before we go accuse Democrats of being
manipulative towards blacks, I think both sides of the story need to be heard.

I think this is a very powerful article. I am very surprised Ben Stein said these things as well. I think that if you are not in the government it is really difficult to actually say if someone is racist or not because you really do not know their motives behind it or not. But i also agree that this brings up a lot of questions as to why decisions are made through the government and as to why the reasoning is not brought up to the public or not enough. It gives people room to wonder and accuse certain people as racists just like this.
ReplyDeleteI think this is an interesting article that should further discussed and analyzed. As Allie said, I believe it is very powerful too. I think to call Obama "racist" is too much. I think Obama is doing whatever he can do but some problems cannot be resolved in days. I think, as Allie, that things should be more brought up to the public and a way to better understand issues.
